The Magic Moment

Today we witnessed that magic creative moment when children understand a media well enough to plan an outcome. We learned about spraying water soluble markers with water and controlling the runoff. 1st grade grade got the concept so well that after a few practice rounds, I heard them plan their work in advance of the water. " I'm making rain clouds... well they're just clouds right now but they'll rain after I finish."

This weeks theme was Revenge; we talked about Artemesia Gentileschi and Samurai films as well as VooDoo dolls and Kill Bill. What about revenge makes it such a good topic for art?

Life and Death

Last weeks theme was Life and Death; the students could choose to work with either one or both depending on their preference. Many decided to illustrate both, while a few worked through personal issues of loss.

1st grade 3D

The first grade is fully engaged in their 3D work now, building farms, racecars and princess hats.
